I believe you have to be ascended on the content you were made, so you have to do the closer to the stars mission to change secondaries.

If you are pressed on time, definitely do protector over reputation titles

Generally it isn't worth it to salvage stuff unless you need it for crafting armor/weapons or if it says "highly salvageable." when...

You can get prophecies for $10 so it isn't a big loss if you don't like it.
