Well... An error in boot.ini has nothing to do with your modem connecting being lost. Maybe you just need to reinstall the software and drivers...

Are you sure you aren't bumping the windows key? It IS right in the middle of the alt and control keys, that will minimize gw, also ALT + TAB...

Win32 is the "aka" of a 32 Bit Windows Operating system. Might just be corrupt or a form of virus that IS attacking win32 itself. But...

What probably happened during the crash is that drivers could have gone corrupt. I'd look up the drivers for all your hardware and reinstall...
