Blizzard didn't exist as a household name until Warcraft 2. Everything before then was mediocre by compare.

Dragon Age isn't really a "competitor." You play the game for 40-100 hours and then you're done until the sequel for most people....

Having new races in expansions as a "buy me!" gimmick is far more appealing than new (imba) classes. Maybe there is hope for GW2 PvP.
