Closing this thread. It was bumped by a spammer and appears to have been resolved in December 2011.
So far I've not been impressed with Windows 8. Don't care for the Metro UI either.
Have you tried pressing Alt-Enter (going fullscreen) and then back to windowed mode?
Could just slave the drive in the new system and copy files over. Much faster than using USB 2.0.
Several sites I've seen say to just avoid hot swapping HDMI. Unless you have a need for HDMI and don't need to hot-swap, just use DVI....
