I think you're missing the category of player that plays competitive PvE. The strictly PvP formats do not appeal to me for the same reason...
I prefered "assigned drops on the floor" method as it rewarded those that were actually there to take part in the event over afk'ers
They're worth it for the experience of doing them, but not for the in game rewards.

I don't have problem with any title. I do however have a problem with any in game effect attached to their progress.
